Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
One of the fundamental goals of Berkeley Rose Waldorf School is to instill in our students the virtues of kindness, respect, open-mindedness and curiosity, which will allow them to be upright and responsible citizens of their community, their country, and their planet. Our faculty and staff strive to create an educational environment that reflects the diversity of humankind with its rich panoply of traditions, practices and ideas.
To this end, Berkeley Rose Waldorf School affirms its unwavering commitment to honoring all humanity, in all its diversity. We recognize the history of bias and prejudice in our culture and make a point of stating clearly our support of historically disadvantaged groups. These include, but are not limited to Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), members of the LGBTQ+ community and Neurodivergent individuals. We understand that inclusion and visibility benefit us all by fostering our ability to empathize, connect and collaborate as a diverse community.
As educators, we are committed to examining our own biases and confronting prejudice and bigotry in all its forms. While our pedagogy is based on the writings of Rudolf Steiner, we reject and oppose his early depictions of religious and racial hierarchy. At the same time, we strive to create a school and environment that is committed to social justice and is welcoming and accepting of all people, regardless of race, religion, sex or gender identity. As part of these commitments, the school has formed the Waldorf Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (WIDE) committee, the goal of which is to support diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging at every level of our curricular and communal life as a school.
